This fourth volume completes an EECM project begun in the 1970s to publish John Sheppard's church music. Significant portions of Sheppard's vernacular sacred survive only as fragments or single voice-parts: the Service in E la mi, the evening canticles 'For Trebles', the 'Service to Four Voices', and his two settings of the earliest metrical psalm translations by Thomas Sternhold. However, Sheppard's intact anthems and services mark him out as a pathfinder in the emergence of a distinctive English tradition of vernacular church music.
