This landmark, two-volume edition, of the Lady Mass according to the Use of Salisbury, is important for several reasons:
- it is the inaugural volume in EECM's subseries of volumes devoted to monophonic repertories (further volumes in this subseries will include, inter alia, Tropes from St Albans Abbey, and English Saints Offices);
- it provides comprehensive performance materials in two dialogic volumes: one for the priest, and one for the choir;
- the edition draws upon 16th-century printed sources, while the Introduction includes a comprehensive study of this central votive rite from before the Norman Conquest;
- a special typeface, Hopyl font, was devised by Timothy Symons for this edition, enabling it to be used in worship, whether on lecterns or book rests;
- it is a legacy of the ESCR/AHRC-funded research project The Experience of Worship whose principal investigator, Prof. John Harper, is the lead editor of EECM 59-60.
Special selections from these volumes will be made available here in due course.
